Disappearing taskbar in Citrix session after locking local workstation

Posted on August 28th, 2008

Problem

Problem discovered on:

  • Windows 2003 R2 x64 Standard Edition
  • Citrix XenApp 4.5 Hotfix Rollup Pack R02

I discovered a problem where a Citrix session is opened to a published desktop running the software levels detailed above. The session can be run as full screen or smaller. When the local client workstation is locked and subsequently unlocked, the start button and taskbar are completely missing.

The problem only occurs with multiple monitors enabled on the client workstation. With multiple monitors disabled, the problem doesn’t appear.

Workaround

1. A workaround to this is the resize the session and then the taskbar reappears.

3. Modify the following registry keys:

HKLM\software\WOW6432Node\Citrix\CtxHook\AppInit_DLLs\MultipleMonitorHook\Flag

Change from 4 to 0 (REG_DWORD)

HKLM\software\WOW6432Node\Citrix\CtxHook64\AppInit_DLLs\MultipleMonitorHook\Flag

Change from 4 to 0 (REG_DWORD)

This may have a knock on effect of preventing the citrix session from spanning multiple monitors although this requires more testing to confirm.

Solution (still awaiting a permanent solution)

According to the forums, this only happens with R02. Removing R02 should resolve the problem although I haven’t tried this yet.

Some forums mention that the post R02 hotfix PSE450R02W2K3X64025.msp resolves the problem, although I have applied this and it makes no difference.

This has now been resolved in the latest version of the Citrix Client (v11.000.5357)
This also requires the PSE450R02W2K3X64025.msp Hotfix to be installed on the server.
