Event ID 11327 – MsiInstaller. Invalid Drive: h:\

Posted on September 11th, 2008

When trying to install a Windows Installer (msiexec) .msi package, the following error may appear:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11327
Description:
Product: ‘Whatever this product name is’ — Error 1327.Invalid Drive: h:\

The MSI package is trying to find an h:\ drive (in this example) and failing if it is not found.
If the install is being perfomed manually the message will appear as a pop up and also in the event viewer. However, If the installation is being performed remotely by a deployment method (Altiris, Citrix Installation Manager, SMS, Appsense Deployment tool) the error will appear in Event Viewer only.
To resolve for a interactive session, check the following locations in the registry for a rogue path:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
To resolve for an automated deployment, check in different locations. Most deployment tools use the local SYSTEM account and this uses the .DEFAULT user profile on the server.
  • HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
  • HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
